Departing All Black legends have said their goodbyes.

The Rugby World Cup final win signals the end of the international careers of Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Dan Carter, Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith and seemingly Richie McCaw.

Any hint of sentimentality was shut down during the week, but All Blacks selector Grant Fox said they've said their farewells in the sheds after the final.

"They all got a chance to speak to the group, and it was a very, very emotional time. Pretty draining in that respect because the guys that are leaving, they are special men."

Lock Sam Whitelock said the six departing All Black stalwarts have left a collective mark on the side.

"They've really embraced the All Black culture, and they've helped it grow and left it in a better spot than when they found it."

Carter was man of the match in the final, and All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said he had been building steadily throughout the tournament.

"He should be really satisfied with what he's done. He's left this team in a really good space, he's guided it well and done himself proud."

Meanwhile, those closest to Richie McCaw believe he'll step into the shadows when he finally announces his retirement.

In the aftermath of winning back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles, the All Blacks captain has been coy on the possibility of adding to his 148 caps.

New Zealand Rugby has made it clear there is a job waiting for him in its office, but All Blacks selector Grant Fox has told Newstalk ZB's Tony Veitch he thinks McCaw will want a complete break.

"I'm not sure the man will be involved in the game initially. I think he'll need some space and he'll go and just do something different, because I just think he's been so consumed and dedicated."
