New Zealand's confirmed Daniel Vettori will play in the third cricket Test against Pakistan starting in Sharjah tonight.

Vettori replaces Jimmy Neesham in the only change to the side as the Black Caps field three spinners in a Test for the first time since 1998.

Captain Brendon McCullum says they're excited Vettori will become New Zealand's most capped player in Tests.

"A huge moment for Dan but also for New Zealand Cricket as well. He currently shares the most capped player with Stephen Fleming and to own that outright is a tremendous achievement and one that we're all really proud of."

McCullum insists playing Vettori isn't a risk.

"Some people will probably look at it and say it's a big risk but from the discussions that Dan and I have had and Mike and some of the other guys who were obviously involved in the decision is that we look at what could go right versus what may go wrong and he's an optimist as well."

Daniel Vettori will play his 112th Test for the Black Caps, nearly two and a half years after his last.
