The Black Caps have fought until the middle of the second session on day four before succumbing to a heavy defeat to Australia at the Basin Reserve.

The tourists have won by an innings and 52 runs after dismissing New Zealand for 327 in their second innings.

Henry Nicholls made a patient 59, while Tim Southee chipped in with a typically entertaining 48.

Nicholls said it was nice to make his maiden half century in tests, but the result hurts.

"Very disappointing result for us and not what we wanted obviously from the start at the test but also from the start of day four today."

Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon took figures of four for 91 in the second innings.

The second and final test starts at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday.
