The Black Caps are on their way towards setting Sri Lanka a massive target to win the first cricket test in Dunedin.

The hosts are 171 for one in their second innings, extending their lead out to 308 runs with two days to play.

Tom Latham is unbeaten on 72, with Kane Williamson not out 48.

Williamson passed 1000 runs for the calendar year early in his innings, becoming just the second New Zealander to do so.

Martin Guptill is the only batsman to be dismissed, falling to spinner Rangana Herath for 46.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka was dismissed for 294 in their first innings, with the Black Caps wrapping up the tail after lunch.

Tim Southee and Neil Wagner each claimed three wickets, while Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner bagged two each.
