Martin Guptill has proved the selectors right in persisting with him in the first test against Sri Lanka.

Guptill brought up his third test century with a magnificent knock of 156, which helped power the Black Caps to 409-8 at stumps.

He also partnered with Latham for a half century opening stand, which got the hosts off to a flying start.

Kane Williamson scored a fluent 88, and Brendon McCullum smashed 75 off just 57 balls.

But McCullum's wicket started a flurry for the Sri Lankans, who took five late wickets for 65 runs.

It took some of the gloss off what was otherwise an excellent effort by the Black Caps, who were put into bat after McCullum lost the toss.

None of the Sri Lankan bowlers managed to dominate, though most chipped in with wickets.
