Nigel Llong won't be given the keys to the third umpire box for the second Black Caps test against Sri Lanka.

It had been expected Llong would be upstairs for the second test in Hamilton, after standing in the middle in the first test in Dunedin starting tomorrow.

But, the ICC now says Richard Kettleborough will be the third umpire in that test with Llong in the middle.

The ICC is playing down the switch, saying changes in umpires are not unusual.

The Englishman was third umpire when he gave Australia a crucial not out decision in the final test against the Black Caps in Adelaide, when Hotspot evidence showed Nathan Lyon should have been given out.

He might have a bit of work to do during the test, with a lot of grass on the University Oval wicket.

While batsman Ross Taylor hasn't seen the deck due to the poor weather, he said the lure of some extra grass is good news for them if they bat or bowl.

"Having Tim and Trent as your opening bowlers, they thrive in those conditions."

"If you find yourself batting first on day one it will be tricky, but it's nice to test yourself out."
