Play has been abandoned on day four of the test between the Black Caps and Sri Lanka in Dunedin.

Despite the rain stopping and the sun shining its brightest all day the ground staff were unable to get the water off the ground and prepare the pitch in time for play to restart.

Sri Lanka finish the day on 109 for 3 with Dinesh Chandimal on 31 and captain Angelo Mathews on zero.

They need 296 runs for victory.

Tim Southee has taken two wickets for the Black Caps, while Neil Wagner has one.

Play will resume tomorrow at 10 o'clock and 98 overs are scheduled to be bowled.

Earlier in the day the Black Caps declared on 267 for 3 - a lead of 404 runs.

Tom Latham hit his third century - finishing unbeaten on 109, while Brendon McCullum equalled former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist's record for the most test sixes, bringing up his 100th in his brief innings of 17.
